Pairings: Elrond, Gil-galad/Lindir
Summary: In which Elrond's joy at his new station as Gil-galad's head minstrel is dashed.

Notes: Entry 3 for Progression100.

Night had fallen over Lindon; beneath the star swept skies, the Elf-King's halls were filled with song and laughter. A celebration was being held within in honour of the new head minstrel, Elrond, who had that day been elected by the King as the champion of the hopefuls who had applied for the position. But now, young Elrond, surrounded by adoring admirers before the King's throne, was troubled. For the throne was empty and there was no sign of the King in the halls.

When a lull came in the stream of congratulators, he left the halls, his face filled with confusion and concern. Of all the celebrators, the one who he had most expected... most desired to attend to him this night was the one who had raised him. The one who called him his beloved heir. The one who had, today, chosen him to stand beside him for the eternity of the kingdom.

As Elrond neared the open doors of Gil-galad's rooms, he suddenly heard soft laughter spring forth from the shadows. He frowned and then, when he recognised a second voice, he froze, felt a chill run up his spine when he heard the voice uplift in a glorious song. 'Twas an intimate song meant for only one listener... a listener who had only hours earlier declared before the kingdom, with all apparent sincerity, that of all the applicant minstrels, he delighted most in Elrond's voice.

The melody suddenly broke off with a yelp. There was a muffled laugh, then an affectionate chastisement from Gil-galad; a chastisement that was certainly no comment about the music. Curious, Elrond stepped closer, and then, when he heard the unmistakable sounds, when he saw the entwined forms, his eyes widened in horror and disbelief. Filled with grief, he turned and fled.
